Architecture is a tool that reflects the will of the few?
According to David Harvey's essay, an indisputable fact is that the polarization between the center and the periphery in urban space is usually constructed or strongly controlled by a small but powerful group. Architects‘ role is often reduced to the beautify program. When the construction decision has been made; when the site has been selected; when the scale and content of the design plan have been determined, the architect will participate. Therefore, the social structure of the evolution of the material, architects and buildings rarely have a decisive influence. As an architect who works in the city often, we should realize that we are at the forefront to imagine the future of the city. However, when we sit in the company and wait for customers’ phone or someone announces a design contest, the future of the city is determined by those who have power, politicians or wealthy developers.
The power of many in the hands of a few. I strongly agree with you. It could be very stressful for an architect to be tight in hands to make a positive change.
ReplyDeleteI agree that this is becoming an increasingly prevalent problem. How do we as architects get in earlier though to make that change and reflect the majority's perspective?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you and Ailed that the decisions are only be made by a few. Architects are always limited by policies, clients, and other power can not express themselves a lot.
ReplyDeletePerhaps architects just need to take a seat at the policy making, future planning table. If we have a chance to voice our opinions and be involved, then maybe we can help design the cities of the future.
