Safety in the City

In Jane Jacobs' book The Death and Life of Great American Cities, she talked about the security of the street space. She observed that the traditional neighborhood has a "defensive" mechanism. Neighbors (including children) can gain a sense of security by distinguishing between acquaintances and strangers because they meet each other every day. And the potential to be "bad man" will also be supervision from neighbors. Jacobs development on the basis of the concept of the so-called "street eye", advocates maintaining small-scale Block, and various small shops on the street, which increase the street people an opportunity to meet each other in life, to enhance the security of the street. I think this also explained why it is important to avoid creating negative space when we do the design. How could people be attracted to the street would be another problem. Like the CBD, suburban residential area and culture concentration areas, actually they are all dysfunctional region. It is important to realize the diversity of the city and the mixture of traditional space use of mutual support.

  1. The reason why the "defensive" mechanism of traditional neighborhood can exit is that its scale is small and it is obviously difficult for large cities to apply it.

  2. I think using smaller scaled shops and blocks is an interesting way to enhance security, but who ultimately makes those decisions for a city/ neighborhood?
