How creative people are!

It was in 2015, when I visited Shanghai, I took some pictures of some abandoned alleyway, which will be demolished and turned into some high rise building. I thought about this after our reading and lecture. When I searched in my folder and went through the pictures I took, I found that people are so creative that we architects really need to give them some space for fun and life. Architects can not design everything.

'空' means 'Empty'. Once this family moved away, the door will be marked empty.
'苍井空' is a famous porn actor in Japan.
People added '仓井' to have fun and as a sarcastic meaning to '空'.
The developer wants residents to move away as soon as possible. And everyone who leaves here tries to argue with the developer to get more money from them.
But, some old people who's been here for nearly whole life don't want to move!

  1. Yage, I love how you capture these things as beauty, when in other's minds they can appear to be dirty or cluttered. I think that it just signifies the fact that these places are being lived in and that people - all with different interests gardening, cooking, porn (as you pointed out), want to customize their spaces and share their uniqueness with their neighbors/world.

  3. Into the torrent of history look, these are moments of things. The French also hated the Eiffel Tower once, but now you can't imagine a French without the Eiffel Tower.

  4. It's interesting that you found these images to talk about the creative things in our daily life. It's also a kind of cultural things. Like in the U.S. people get used to dry their clothes by machine. In Europe, people always prefer to dry their clothes in the natural way on their balconies, which is similar with what you showed in Shanghai(because of the limitation of the building space, people just hang their clothes outside.)

  5. Great, Yage. Your photos show us a hidden world covered by the shinny appearance of big cities in China. Since the population is so big in a typical Chinese city, the city can definitely not be developed in one day. As a visitor, you can only find the daily lives that the city wants to show you and you will never experience these undercover lives. However, they are also the important part of the city.
