A Facilitator of the Everyday

Following Habraken’s train of thought, as the architect shifts to “everyday” projects, the role of the architect can become a facilitator of the everyday user. The user is the center of the ordinary. Habraken’s work points out how everyday spaces normally evolve naturally through social and material dynamics and are not always, not even often, the result of the architects' interventions and vision. It is a certainly a service oriented way of looking at the profession, but if followed too far, dissipates the theoretical need for architects.

  1. I think you make a good point, If left completely up to the layman the need for architects would be null, but I also think design would suffer if everything were designed that way. As architects, I believe it's our job to find that balance between letting a user design while guiding them through with our own design experience.
