Reactive Architecture
I was intrigued by Crawford’s ideas of everyday urbanism, especially in her observations that “lived experiences should be more important than the physical form in defining the city”. I agree with this statement, but I wonder how architecture finds its role if we accept that the city is a “social product”. Should architecture respond to the experiences and behavior of the city? Do we limit the experience of the inhabitants by anticipating or imagining how they should use space? This reading made me wonder if there is space for “reactive” architecture, a practice of using design to define the form of the function rather than defining the function with the form.
