"Lived in Architecture"
This week in history we talked about lived in architecture where tenants/users had agency over their spaces by continuing to build onto what was originally built. This is a type of architecture that is popular now and should continue into the future as it lets the user have creativity over their space and make choices about how they live. An example of this from class was Quartiere Fruges in Pessac by Le Corbusier which started as simple, modern space without ornamentation and changed over time as users made the space their own. Le Corbusier’s pure uncontaminated geometry became the perfect frame for people to appropriate. Another example of this that we’re familiar with would be Lee 3 which is essentially a white box that’s clean and modern but the contaminated messy parts of it are the students and their stuff that they’ve used to make it their own. You can really see the life inside the building when everyone is there in the middle of the day moving about and creating.
