Seattle Aquarium Ocean Pavilion
One particular instance that comes to mind from our discussions on "architecture & participation is an aquarium located in Seattle, Washington. This project, among many others designed by LMN architects, showcases their commitment to community engagement and active participation in the design process. Situated on the Coast Salish land, this particular project collaborated extensively with local tribes and the Urban native community to help guide and influence much of the programming, design, and cultural essence of the building through landscape, certain exhibits and public art. A lot of the participation during this project encompassed listening to traditional stories told my tribal leaders, conducting workshops with tribal youth, and holding design sessions with tribal members. Another great project to look out by this firm is Mukilteo Multimodal Ferry Terminal, also mixes architecture and participation and respecting the culture and history of its site.
It is so good to read that architects at present time do engage with the public to formulate the program. I loved the idea of conducting workshops with tribal youth while the project was in the design process! It is inspiring and makes me feel like working with firms like these! Thanks for sharing!
