Theory of Support
The most interesting thing to me in the movie was, that it doesn't
only talk about public participation, but he developed a theory which is called
the ‘Theory of Support’ which undermines the conventional method of approaching
architecture by highlighting the significance of offering a framework or
support structure that permits user involvement and adaptability.
I share Habraken's belief that people should have a voice in
creating their built environment and that architecture should be receptive to
the requirements and preferences of its occupants.
The concept of Habraken's Open Building, which distinguishes
between a building's permanent structure (the support) and its flexible
features that can be altered over time (the infill), is the most insightful
thing I learned from the film. With this method, buildings may adapt to
changing needs and change over time without needing significant structural
modifications.
I like the fact that Habraken in those earlier times thought
about affordability and sustainability in architecture. I think that creating
buildings with easy-to-modify and adapt designs lowers maintenance and
renovation costs, increasing housing accessibility and sustainability over
time.
