“To avoid this breach with reality, everyday urbanism
demands a radical repositioning of the designer, a shifting of power from the
professional expert to the ordinary person. Widespread expertise in everyday
life acts as a leveling agent, eliminating the distance between professionals
and users, between specialized knowledge and daily experience.” - Margaret Crawford
I think this quote emphasizes how important our mindset should
be when approaching design. Designing for the comfortability of our inhabitants
should be our top priority. Throughout our design process there should be moments
where we must step back as an architect and just imagine how we would want to
use a space in our everyday life. Sometimes it is not as straightforward to not
think as an architect given that we have our own ambitions and design
strategies we want to implement into our buildings. Which is why it is so
important to work with the communities and neighborhoods we design in. Sometimes
even a client may not have the comfortability of their building in mind, which
now falls under our responsibility to present the best solutions possible.
