Plastic Architecture
For years in school we spend day in and day out thinking about creating the perfect artistic piece. However we seldom consider buildings being lived in and used. This chapter is interesting to me because it considers real life which is messy and unpredictable and not always as pristine as we like to depict in our renderings. This idea of giving people the chance to customize their own space according to their needs and preferences is not always something we design for. Sanaa’s method of drawing in the small details of daily life to me shows the consideration of life happening within the space over time. I relate the Seven Sister’s House (Frank Harmon) to this ideology. This house is very specific to the authentic life of the family and adapts to their lifestyle.
I completely agree with the idea of how we design sometimes does not allow for user customization. It is an interesting concept to allow the user/owner to be able to have creative liberty in the spaces architects help create. I personally have been seeing a lot more of 'customizable architecture,' such as house plans where there is an array of different options that an owner can choose from. I do think this is a fine line that can result in a loss of creativity and good design, so it is a major challenge for us as designers to find this balance.
