Alberti's Designs
In the article ‘Questions That Will Not Go Away’, the architect Leon Alberti is mentioned. He believed that design should not be constrained by the everyday environment or by tradition. He wanted to focus on a new way of building and innovation in architecture. I took Professor Tim Brown’s façade class last year and heavily studied Alberti’s work: the Santa Maria Novella. Of the buildings studied, I’d have to argue that this one was one of the most simple, being just marble attached to the side to form a white and green pattern. However, hearing that he wants to innovate, it makes me think of how no one has quite been able to determine what proportions he used to guide the façade. It makes me want to revisit the building, and Alberti as a architect, and see what else I can uncover.
