Vegas Baby
Currently I'm reading Learning from Las Vegas by Venturi and it's an extremely interesting read; the development of Vegas has been the epitome of American consumerism. While the city is insane with outrageous visuals and care-free atmosphere, the architecture pushes the limits for what's possible in our field. The experimentation of building design in Vegas, whether its ugly, bad, amazing, efficient, whatever, is unlike anywhere in the world. Las Vegas is kind of a free-for-all for architecture in a sense. It gives a place for the extremes. And since its in the middle of the desert and has been like this since it's founding, its not impeding on preexisting culture/traditions. It's really interesting how the city and its buildings are designed to entertain; for people to spend money. From casino design to the wedding chapels, the point of all of it is to get the user to have the most fun while spending money.
