Contradicting Thoughts

After the debate last week, I knew that I really wanted to focus my blog post on a reflection of what I personally gained from it.  The debate really sparked some excellent questions and conversation from the “would you rather” game that was played.  There were great examples of all theories we have discusses that lead everyone to expressing their own personal opinions on the theories.  In fact, I really caught myself contradicting my former beliefs and arguments a good bit!

For example, each week, after I read the readings and we have a class discussion, I form an opinion of my thoughts on that particular theory, whether I agree or disagree.  A few weeks ago I wrote a blog post on form and function, and how I personally believed they should work hand in hand.  I also insinuated that form was more so important in my opinion, where function could be placed on the “back burner” when necessary.  During the game, however, I caught myself choosing the place to live that was more functional verses the one that had the better/more appealing form.  To me, this was a total contradiction of my previous thoughts.  It was an immediate decision that I didn’t even have to contemplate.  Here, function seemed to outweigh form to me.

Another comparison that really stood out to me was the strip mall/pyramid example. Would you rather design/build a pyramid that is only "used" by dead people, or build a strip mall that is boring, but essentially used by everyone?  Prior to the discussion, I would have hands down argued that I would rather design a pyramid due to the craft and overall beautiful, unique appearance of the final product.  Again, form typically took precedent to me.  I love when I can make something beautiful for people to enjoy, right?  Well, actually no one would be really enjoying the pyramid, so I came to the conclusion that I would much rather design a strip mall that people would be using and interacting with.  After all, I mentioned how I love when I can design something for people to utilize and enjoy.  Again, I was contradicting myself.

To use...

or - not to use...

There were many other examples that I found myself in complete opposite thought than what I always thought I believed, those were just two.

I love that this class is based on theories of architecture, and that we all are encouraged to have our own individual opinions regarding them.  I learn every class period from my classmates that have totally different opinions than me on a given topic.  Team 1 did an excellent job on posing questions that inherently generated great conversation and debate on topics that (I thought) I always knew where I stood on.  Putting these theories and ideas into perspective really enhanced my thought process and analysis of the topics in the best way!
