I'm Watching You Wazowski
"Love your neighbor as yourself.’ This is the most important thing because nothing else matters. In doing so, an architect will act on a foundation of decency which can be built upon. Go above and beyond the call of a ‘smoothly functioning conscience’; help those who aren’t likely to help you in return, and do so even if nobody is watching!" a quote from Samuel Mockbee's Rural Studio.
The temptation to become complacent in designing architecture upon entering the work place can be tempting. I believe what Mockbee was getting at was that at the core of it architecture is a social art designed for the people of here and now. Mockbee is simply challenging us as architects and designers to be honest. I enjoyed reading how he would challenge his students to build with a moral sense of service to one's community instead of designing out of selfish wims.
Here is where I disagree slightly with Mockbee. This may sound selfish but does not spending 7+ years in school and several years in a firm not enough to leave your mark on the world even it does not "help" the social surroundings? I do believe architects should serve their community; however, I do not think we should lose our freedom with our designs.
