The idea that architecture is becoming so focused on the façade is kind of a scary thought. Most of the time spent in relation with a building is the interior. Little of the physical interaction with a building is the façade. Sure we see it all the time, but we don't touch it. We don't inhabit the façade. The exterior needs to communicate and relate to the inside. To me that is what makes us architects. Someone who understands and designs the whole building. If the interior is designed by interior designers, the building is designed by engineers, and the architect comes in with a fancy façade, then I don't know why we will need architects.
To quote Aaron Autry, "really hope architecture doesn't trend towards a superficial façade design profession just because its cheaper to attach a box to a expensive façade because that would suck."
I agree, Tre - it actually is pretty scary when you look at it in those three categories... interior designers = interiors / engineers = building / architects = fancy facade
ReplyDeleteI agree to an extent - and I may be in the minority here - but I would argue that it is not completely necessary that the interior and exterior perfectly relate to each other, as the two are almost never experienced simultaneously. I do, however completely agree that the interior design of a building is arguably the most important, and I think it is necessary that an architect is involved in each aspect of the building design - both the interior and exterior. Otherwise, you are right - our profession would slowly become obsolete.
