The Experience( Week 9)

We always had this assumption that Architecture has an Artistic aspect that is critical in various situations. I believe that aspect pulled up our buildings drastically post-industrialization. At least that's the inception for the globalization of Architecture, I believe. I completely agree with the 6 points explained by Kenneth Frampton.  Culture, Site location, Structural material, and many other factors play a vital role in Architecture. The Industrial revolution made Architects re-invent the wheel and gave them freedom from those pre-existing constraints.

The Park Hotel, Hyderabad India.

This kind of approach made the impossible possible. Avant-Gardes experimented in realizing theories into buildings like Deconstructivism. That is when we might have lost Critical Regionalism. But the same Deconstructivism started realizing the regional theories to make the users relate to where they are and the background of the place.

Courtyard type designs, geometrically similar to Lotus petal.

For example, Mumbai Airport in India was designed by SOM. They have considered the typical courtyards seen in every building from regional Indian architecture and used the national flower "Lotus as one of the main inspirations for the airport. This building, I believe, is not a straight copy of any building in Indian architectural history but still provides the regional experience and can relate to the local culture, being technically advanced(deconstructivism or parametric design) at the same time.

  1. I like your post about Critical Regionalism and a little bit of background on how we (as a community) advanced into the era of architectural practice that we have. You touched on Kenneth Frampton’s 6 points of architecture and listed out a few of those points. I was curious if you thought that was a well-rounded/complete list of if you believe there are any additional points that could be added to his list? I think about some of the things we have learned in school and wonder if things like resilience or adaptability should also be considered to his list?

    1. Although I agree that Resilience and Adaptability are few in-demand characteristics for architecture, I believe they do not relate with the 6 points that were discussed by Kenneth Frampton.

From what I understand, Resilience and adaptability were essentials and Critical Regionalism would be more under desirable category.
