A Crab on LSD

Junkspace are the remnants of modern architecture and to Koolhaas, it is senseless and reductive. The boundaries between private and public do not necessarily exist and spaces are prone to agelessness or catastrophic aging. The design history of the motel reflects Koolhaas's consideration of junkspace. A motel space takes its origin in in lodges or 'sheds' that eventually evolved into modular or pre-fabricated housing, built in built and easy to self-assemble. Building materiality was previously defined on final state that could be modified at expense of partial destruction, but now they have become more and more modular and standardized due to cultures abandonment of repetition and regularity are repressive. In this, the motel occupied junkspace. In short, it is "a crab on LSD, culture wobbles endlessly sideways.... there is no progress"- Rem Koolhaas.

  1. I think the quote that you used here is one many of us overlooked. The metaphor of culture in Junkspace to a crab making no progress is strong, as well as a good showcase of Rem's humor and ability to maintain a readers' attention.

  2. I think that there can be value to "Junkspace" that can begin to create character to a building especially when they are removed it can cause design to become more dull and standardized
