 Clem-Space

Time to empty the junk into the bin! Transit is the new commuter! At what point do we draw the line and say enough is enough! When do we question those in authority when decisions involve our everyday student's life? What the University's planning department is doing and continues to do needs to be addressed. JunkSpace is spending 80' million on a tv screen(and "other renovations") while still having an open stadium that exposes you to unpredictable weather. What is the point of attending a live sporting event if I'm going to neck and look at the screen?

JunkSpace is completely dismantling the roads to make more double-lane roads for cars you won't even prove parking for. JunkSpace is removing vegetation that has lived longer than our lifetime. JunkSpace is asking students to park on deserted, dark, unpaved roads and where they must cross a highly mechanical construction site. JunkSpace is the road most traveled. JunkSpace is ignoring the voice of the students that make the university and believing they continue to fail them. JunkSpace space has broken circulation and excessive parking. JunkSpace is every lead project in Clemson. Architecture is more than just a building that occupies; it's what forms; cities, communities, blocks, homes…

  1. I agree with you that JunkSpace is the result of putting money and profit first instead of the well being of people. We can all relate to your aggravation with Clemson parking and the waste of funds. Like Rem Koolhaas says in his article, Junkspace is everywhere. Your point just touches on the psychological and societal effects of living in a built environment based off of greed and profit.

  2. Nice Take Edgar! Unpopular opinion, but I am actually a fan of the gravel lot. It always helps me decide on my shoe choice for the day and keeps me on my toes for each commute to class. The sound of zooming cars in the morning really wakes me up and prepares me for the day so I can be my best self as a graduate student at the greatest university in the country!

  3. Kelsey's comment killed me. haha. But this is an interesting take Edgar. Things for giving an immediate example and translating junkspace into what Clemson does. I feel like a couple more examples are: tearing down trees to building an open lawn (lawn in front of the non-denomination chapel), or ruining the landscape to build massive 50' tall retaining walls at many of the apartment complexes you see in the area to maximize users on site). The way apartment complexes building dense low rise housing should also be abolished. Removing the maximum amount of land to building the lowest (cheapest) structures in the most dense fashion possible.

  4. I think it is interesting because as Koolhaas pointed out, the center of junkspace most often returns to the specific point of providing entertainment to the user. And in the instance of Clemson, no other source of entertainment other than football is driving all of these wildly anti-student decisions. It doesn't matter if the daily experience of the student is interrupted - the experience of the tailgater and season ticker holder is the only consideration of propelling junkspace.
