Reflection on [Junk] space

“If space-junk is the human debris that litters the universe, junk-space is the residue mankind leaves on the planet.”

Rem Koolhaas takes a stance on junk-space as being a repetitious matter. In the built environment, we tend to self-replicate what we know by filling the space with useless things that confuse the mind into thinking these spaces are valuable. He characterizes junk spaces as devaluing architectural context by surrounding great works of composition with senseless and reductive work. I agree to some extent that some junk-space splinters the space rather than uniting which is the intent but most of the time, architecture is the reflection of the users and their needs. It may seem senseless and reductive now looking back at these “junk spaces” but in the time it was created, those “junk spaces” possessed value and merit.

  1. It's interesting how junk space can be contextual. If I am recalling the image you have shared correctly, it is a drawing by Lebbeus Woods. This work in particular challenges the notion of architecture, the notion of war, and their similarities. 2. It seems like the main concept into "Junkspace" was to create something new, something that no one has ever experience before. It was designed around the people in mind but it became more about profit than the environment or the people. it has seem to me that Junkspaces today are seen as waisted space because we spend most of our time on the internet and not valuing the spaces around us.
