Freedom By Design

Much of our recent readings have focused on the idea of giving design power to the inhabitant rather than the to the whims of the architect or client. Through this, endlessly adaptable forms of reality are created through the creation of "individual freedom within a collective framework."

While adaptability and customization are important values to instill in a design, it seems as though many of the recent examples give an excessive amount of freedom to the inhabitants. As designers, we are trained to carefully curate environments meant to enhance and maximize the health and welfare of those we design for. Safety, efficiency, environmental concerns, sound, and lighting are just a few architectural elements we are trained to instill in our designs. How far is too far when it comes to giving the control to the user?
