Harnessing tactical creativity

De Certeau defines strategic operation and tactical operation. I am intrigued by the ideas related to tactic (creativity, cleverness, seized opportunities.) How can we, as designers and architects, tap into this type of thinking? With formal education comes preconceptions of right and wrong. Are we taught to think like users or are we taught to think like designers? How can we be as creative and resourceful as tactical thinkers while staying true to our architectural knowledge?

Is this what tactical thinking looks like? How can we use this type of thinking to improve the general quality of life?

  1. It seems that tactical thinking is directly tied to constraints and our approach to those constraints - do we embrace them as a challenge, or defer to the status quo? One example is Nemausus where Nouvel wanted to provide units that were larger than typical in social housing. His tactic was the creative use of technology to offset the cost of larger units.
