Project Sparingly
The Doppler Effect and Other Modes of Modernism
Somal and Whiting claim that projective architects don't claim expertise on anything except design. The sum of their efforts and knowledge result in pure design and an effect on other topics such as politics, culture, information technology, etc.
Bjark Ingles work very clearly exhibits a projective stance. His waste incineration building in Copenhagen incorporates play and experiment in design with ever changing technological fields. He claims no expertise to how CO2 works or the process behind its generation. He literally says he claims no knowledge. However he does create an iconic funhouse for the city of Copenhagen by employing pure design.
I understand where projective architecture comes from. In a world of changing technology its almost impossible to be very knowledge on more than one topic. Its makes the most sense to stick with one expertise and incorporate a team of consultants into design.
I believe projective architecture should and could be used in moderation throughout a city. It should be employed when a building wants to say "look at me!" "look what I can do!" especially when it is directly related to the technology sector where the organization of the profession can change overnight. But could you imagine an entire city of "look at me!"s? It would be complete chaos and the city would lose its identification and order. Everything would be creating its own rules to occupy.
I believe because of the Doppler Effect, projective architecture should exist but it should not dominate the logos of architectural thought.
