Critical Regionalism

After talking about critical regionalism, the ideas of cultures evolving and tactile designs stood out to me. It is important, as designers, to learn from the local cultures we are working with, rather than just observing them. I don’t think that we can truly have a sufficient impact in the places we design, until we fully emerge ourselves into the culture to see what issues exist there, what the cultural identity is, etc. If we go about our designs without understanding these topics, then we design from a place of ignorance and we are not resolving anything. One thing that stuck with me after the lecture was working with both heritage and modernization because we need to implement both in our designs to respect the area we are designing in but bringing up to today’s code standards. I feel like oftentimes one is emphasized over the other, but they need to be balanced for a design to reach its fullest potential.

  1. I agree with needing to understand and embrace the culture of the environment that we design in. We tend to think we know it all by doing are research online but I believe we truly don't understand it until we experience and see it for ourselves.
