How We Teach Space
As architects, our training focuses on representations of space, learning how to draw, model and diagram to represent a space visually. However, less instruction and pedagogy choose to equip emerging professionals with representational and practical space. For instance, law and policy are crucial components of representational space to be able to collaborate with governments and owners in the creation of space. Recently, Mockbee’s Rural Studio has revealed the importance and value of introducing architecture students to the “space of practice” by listening and responding to everyday routines and realities with the tools of architectural education. The diagram from the lecture, to me, should be the pedagogical pursuit of architectural education to produce better and more well-rounded architects.
