Designing For Everyone
Samuel Mockbee's Rural Studio gives me inspiration about the potential for architecture to truly make a difference. For me I find that sometimes it can be hard to see where architecture is making an impact. Sometimes it feels like innovation can only happen on some of the biggest projects for the richest people, but Mockbee has proven that architecture doesn't have to be expensive or grandiose to create an impact on people's lives. In fact, the smaller projects, saving costs and materials, while still producing beautiful spaces, will have more impact and reach to so many more people. According to World Bank around 46.9 percent of the world currently lives in poverty. As architects we are equipped with the skillset to design beautiful spaces, something that's possible regardless of cost or the newest, fanciest technology. I love the way Mockbee describes architecture as "divine", this divine architecture can change the quality of a person's experiences and deserves to be available to anyone, regardless of their financial status.
Hi Peyton,
ReplyDeleteI agree that good architecture should be available to anyone regardless of who they are or what they have. I think it's interesting to think of working on these small projects that don't necessarily have a large budget as a challenge to see how creatively we can solve the design problem and come up with a solution that is beneficial to everyone.
