Identity
While researching Global cities and exploring the notion of ‘Decoding Asian Urbanism’, I was able to correlate this to one of my core values as a designer. Cultural Identity. The concept of decoding Asian urbanism delves into a deeper understanding of cities- understanding their evolution and functionality past the surface level. Cultural preservation and identity are some of the factors that help define global cities. For example, Traditional Courtyard Houses in Beijing. These preserved homes have been able to maintain identity and culture- while serving a more modern-day use. This idea of capturing vernacular architecture is captivating and should be considered in every design process.
