What is Architecture Without Culture
In my opinion it has always been architecture’s duty to represent its local culture. However with the ever changing world requiring new technological solutions, it may be easy to undervalue these traditions. The need to make relevant architecture can lead to people assuming they have to leave behind elements that give them unique identity. Critical regionalism offers a path in between where traditions can not only be embraced but added on to while still integrating the technology necessary for a contemporary society. A great example of this is the Gando teacher’s housing by Kere Architecture. While being inexpensive, Kere uses scientifically advanced methods for utilizing local materials and crafts in a way that is responsive to the conditions of the site. In addition to this use of local construction methods in innovative ways, it is also respectful to local aesthetics. Through water collection, natural ventilation, and knowledge of local material properties, Kere creates architecture that is adapted to the site’s climate. By involving the surrounding community, this architecture has first hand influence from the local culture.
