The Day the Music Died

I constantly see this debate online about modern architecture, particularly residential modern architecture, being the downfall of the built environment. Many people think it lacks character and life and I agree with all these opinions on it. Sometimes I wish we could go back to traditional styles of architecture that were commonly built centuries ago, and it wasn't until class this week that I started to understand the argument for not copying what has been done before. I will always be the first to say that I think that modern architecture is hideous 9 times out of 10. I think it lacks character and personality. I think it' an easy way to get around having to truly understand the culture and region for which you are designing for.

So, if copying the past is unoriginal and overdone, but modern architecture is the easy answer, what is the right way to design? I don't think there is one answer to this question. I think this is our challenge as designers and will be our eternal challenge.
