Interior or Exterior

The topic this week reminded me of a quote from a few weeks ago regarding special buildings. In summary, it said that if all buildings are special, how do any stand out? It also said that there is something good about the mundane. I feel as combining the importance of the exterior over the interior and the importance of the interior over the exterior almost works as a solution to this. With some buildings having a boring or plain exterior, it leaves room for the façade focused buildings to stand out on the street and hold onto the overall image of the city. On the other hand, some buildings would have a very interesting interior, giving more ways for one to experience a walking through a building. I feel it is hard to make a stance on one over the other when they can compliment each other so well.

  1. Your post and the image made me think about the influence of a building's location on the how emphasis is placed on exterior vs interior spaces in a building's design. I think with buildings that are located in highly dense, urban areas, having a slightly greater emphasis on envelope design makes a lot of sense. In a more remote area, the program and what the building offers may be more important than fitting into the city's fabric, so interiors may be more important. I think you make a good point that hints at the fact that not every building is the same, and different designs are necessary to meet the project needs.

  2. I remember in class he said something along the lines of you can have a beautiful envelope but if you don't take that within the interior than it was wasted opportunity. Personally, I find it dreadful working in a firm and working out the program, designing the exterior architecture, only to pass it off to an interiors team. I have a certain vision for something and the interior needs to match and tell the same story as the exterior. And having that separate team who was never involved in the initial thought process would not capture correctly.

  3. Morgan, this is a great question that you pose of whether the exterior is more important than the interior and vice versa. I am of the opinion that architects should design from a user-centered perspective, in this case designing from the inside out. It would be interesting to see the two versions contrasted and the outcomes of each ideal!
