Design for all!

The classroom structures for primary and secondary school

In the reading, ‘The Right to the City’, Lefebvre criticizes the isolating consequences of capitalist urbanization. The metropolitan areas are frequently planned based on serving the interests of capital rather than the needs of locals. I feel that this alienation negatively affects daily existence and causes social disintegration and dissatisfaction with the city. For example, strolling through Charleston's downtown, one feels incredibly a part of the city and its culture. However, there is an obvious sense of disintegration with the area as soon as one walks along Morrison Drive, particularly via the Morrison yards, the Pinnacle skyscraper, and other construction.

I gained a new perspective from the movie, ‘Rebel Architecture - Guerrilla Architect’. I liked it when he said, “People think that my architecture is ugly! Don’t you have an ugly friend!” It's not always about creating visually appealing structures. In my opinion, architecture is a powerful tool that can be used to design and construct structures under any conditions. The conditions portrayed in the film are not perfect. Still, he is bringing change and making lives better! This is really inspiring.

“Architecture should be functional and affordable. It should be a good reason to come together!”

  1. I love the quote "architecture should be functional and affordable. It should be a good reason to come together." I completely agree with your post, architecture should have a positive impact on those who use it and should be functional and integrate into the lives of the user not fight against them.
