Personalization as a symptom of Humanity

It is interesting to me to think about architecture now as a frame for the user to create their own space within. We often spend time trying to create the perfect, complete building or space with little consideration for how the user may change or inhabit the space. I believe architects should make space for users to add their own creativity to space. Architecture can serve as a canvas for the occupants to humanize a space. I notice this being practiced more as a focus during my experience with residential work. I spent a lot of time working with clients to make sure I can create the space and opportunity for them to appropriate their space.

When researching this idea, I came across a city in China that was known for its personalized storefronts which gave the city life, personality and energy. However during a recent clean up effort, the nearly designed storefronts seem sterile, empty, and uninhabited. It makes me wonder which method serves the community best? I believe when people are able to make their mark on a place it becomes more special.
