Design for Change

Samuel Mockbee’s work with Rural Studio really stood out to me from this week’s topic on spaces of social justice. Having participated in the Community Build program this past year, I think it is extremely important for us in the profession of architecture to better understand community rooted design. While most may have a basic understanding of community design, I think where architects are still lacking is fully understanding the context of the communities and truly listening to their needs. Mockbee’s work shows fantastic consideration for all the areas culture of the community first and foremost, but also landscape, affordability, etc. I think in order to have more spatial justice in design work, architects need to reference the outlines of work developed by people like Mockbee to apply to their offices’ community work. One firm that I think is doing this well and weaving this type of work into their office is Payette with their farm stands, which I encourage everyone to look into more.
