Sometimes Breaking The Rules Is A Good Thing
I was most inspired by the required video this week and the way communities have found ways to build, even if they're working outside of the law. Without risking human life, I would love to see more illegal architecture. In some ways, our industry moves quickly, but it does often feel like we see the same old materials and methods and I would love to see more architects skirting around legality to get things done! It just feels frustrating that we have so many options and amazing inventions that exist but they rarely end up in projects. And worse, the typical approach to architecture relies on the common methods which often means wasting time and money. It’s just stupid to rely on the way we’ve always done things at the expense of actually making affordable and timely buildings for people who need them. Not every building needs to be pretty and perfect as not every community has the time for that. Some of my all-time favorite architects essentially make themselves useless through their design philosophy and I find that so inspiring. Teaching communities how to build and produce for themselves so they can be self-reliant should be the ultimate goal, at least in my ideal world.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. It's cool to see how communities get creative with building; it is a unique type of creativity born of need and innate knowledge, that we sometimes can never achieve to the same level.
Absolutely, it feels like architecture often gets stuck in old ways, not wanting to try out new materials or methods that could totally change how we build stuff. When architects start bending the rules a bit, it opens up all kinds of cool possibilities for making buildings that are cheaper, work better, and are easier for people to use, especially those who really need them.
