The Social Construct of Architecture
This week we talked about Alejandro Zaera who has a quote “the discipline has been split into those who believe architecture is a mere social construct and those who believe that architecture’s facts are determined by the inexorable laws of physics, economics, buildability, climatology, and ergonomics.” I enjoyed learning about this quote as architecture has always and will always be affected by those elements of everyday life. I hope that architecture will always be able to respond to our environment and social and culture aspects. This is what makes architecture relatable to everyone. If we don’t consider those elements when designing then we are designing in a vacuum because anything we put out into the world as designers will be affected and affect economics, buildability, and ergonomics, etc. You cannot have one without the other, architecture is the culmination of many cultures, backgrounds, and ways of living. This is why we have so many styles and eras of architecture. If we didn’t design and create to fit our lifestyle then we would all have the same style of architecture.
