Style over Function
Something interesting in class that stuck out to me was David saying something along the lines of that you can have a beautiful envelope but if you don't take that within the interior that it was wasted opportunity.
Understanding both Alejandro Zaera's "The Politics of the Envelope" and Peter Zumthor's "Atmospheres", I think both readings go hand in hand. While Zaera explores the significance of architectural facades, Zumthor talks about the concept of atmosphere in architecture, exploring how architectural spaces can evoke particular moods, feelings, and sensations. I think both are necessary to make architecture more functional. Both ideas need to be present in the way we design because in the end, if we think about too much of one thing or another, the design will ultimately lack something. People will tend to notice what's wrong, even if they don't know exactly what it is. There becomes this sense of displacement that people will experience when our designs are not cohesive and telling the story from outside, in.
