Architectural Ruins Tell the Story of a City’s History

There are a lot of examples throughout history where catastrophe strikes a city and in a way wipes the city of its history. On the other hand it could be seen as a moment that shapes the future of the city and changes its course. This change could affect not only the architecture but also the way society works within it. After the French revolution, Paris saw a change in its infrastructure as well as its persona, becoming a city of fashion, cafes, etc. In the case of the Detroit riots, this event would change not only the architecture of the city but the population make up as well. Leading up to this event, Detroit's inequities in housing, jobs and education were rampant, in addition to violent civil oppression sparked civil unrest.The architectural aftermath of this revolution is with a large spread amount of businesses and residences burned, the city has still not been rebuilt and continues to lose its population. Despite its slow rate, there are opportunities within the city to rebuild. Old factories in the middle of residential neighborhoods now have the potential to be renovated into shops and galleries with the aim to revive the neighborhood. While the architectural aftermath of the city is evident, the social effects were even greater. This moment in history would be another great push towards change and ultimately raise awareness to the need for comprehensive urban renewal and social rejuvenation, underscoring the critical importance of equitable development and community empowerment.
